What Is the Ita Ajero Festival?
The Ita Ajero Festival is an annual cultural celebration in Ijero‑Ekiti, bringing together Ijero indigenes from Nigeria and the diaspora.
It was conceptualized by the Owa Ajero of Ijero Kingdom (HRM Oba Joseph Adebayo Adewole) in memory of the historic Ita Ijero quarters in Ile-Ife where the exodus of the Olofin Oduduwa children decided to found their Kingdoms in various parts of Yoruba land at the instance of Ajero ki Osa, the fourth eldest direct son of Oduduwa and the royal patriarch of Owa Ajero Dynasty.
Ita Ajero Festival was birthed to unite Ijero sons and daughters at home and abroad, to celebrate our heritage from Ita Ijero (Ita Ajoro) quarters in Ile-Ife (the cradle of the Yorubas)and to promote communal development in the modern times.
Significance & Themes
The Cultural Festival is named after Ajero, the paramount ruler of the regal seat of Ijero, the festival symbolizes identity, unity, and respect for Yoruba traditions.
It brings together royalty and descendants of Oduduwa, fostering communal dialogue and cultural continuity.
Government & Royal Support
In 2024, Ekiti’s Deputy Governor ,Her Excellency Chief Mrs Christiana Monisade Afuye praised the festival, highlighting its role in uniting Ijero indigenes and strengthening the local economy through cultural tourism.
The Ooni of Ife ,His Imperial Majesty,Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja II pledged to help elevate Ita Ajero to a global tourism festival and tasked the Ekiti Tourism Bureau to lead branding efforts for 2025 and beyond.

The next edition — 2nd Annual Ita Ajero Cultural Festival — is scheduled for August 18, 2025 , in Ijero‑Ekiti. It’s being hosted by the Ijero Descendants Association of Texas.
