Barrister Omowunmi Ogunrotimi, founder and Executive Director, Gender Mobile (Nigeria) has received congratulations from around the globe on winning the 2025 Global Citizen Prize for her efforts in combating poverty,gender- based corruption through preventative education, technology integration, and making extraordinary efforts to impact her communities for better.

Omowumi Ogunrotimi, a fearless feminist lawyer and founder of the Gender Mobile Initiative, is transforming Nigeria’s fight against gender-based violence. With over 10 years of advocacy, she has championed the adoption of sexual violence policies in 22 states and over 150 universities. Ogunrotimi’s leadership helped pass the Sexual Harassment Bill in Tertiary institutions at the Federal House of Representatives. As an Ashoka Fellow and award recipient, she remains dedicated to eradicating gender inequality, passionately driving legal reforms, and empowering communities to demand justice and change.” Fatoki Taiye Timmy (Lagbaja), said.

“Omowumi Ogunrotimi is a Feminist lawyer and founder of Gender Mobile Initiative with over a decade of experience in accelerating systems-change to transform structures and practices that enable violence against women and girls and preserve gender disparities.”

She has led key advocacies and, more recently, led the advocacy effort for the passage of the Sexual Harassment Prohibition Bill by the Federal House of Representatives.

Her work at Gender Mobile Initiative facilitated the state-level adoption of sexual harassment policy frameworks by 26 subnational governments and over 150 higher education institutions.

She leads the co-creation of approaches to combat gender-based corruption through policy influencing, preventative education, technology integration, and social norms programming.

She is a member of the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence Management Committee under the leadership of Her Excellency,the First Lady of Ekiti State,Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji.

She is an Ashoka Fellow and recipient of awards such as the Commonwealth Award, JCI ten outstanding young persons of Nigeria, World Justice Forum Honoree, YALI award on leadership and Human Rights, Attorney General award on gender equality among others.

She is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Commonwealth Society, a Civic Hive Fellow, and an Institute of Justice and Reconciliation Honoree.

Ms Omowumi Ogunrotimi and four others will be awarded the Global Citizen Prize and Cisco Youth Leadership Award on April 30 in New York, USA.The award will be presented to honour these young leaders from around the world making extraordinary efforts to impact theirs communities.

” This year awards honuor five young people who are taking action to combat climate change, address systemic barriers, empower girls, and champion change in all its forms. The recipients will each receive a year-long programme of support from Global Citizen, together with a cash grant for their organization.”

The Global Citizen Prize 2025 awardees are:

Valeriia Rachynska , Director of Human Rights, Gender and Community Development, 100% Life, from Ukraine;

Taily Terena , Anthropologist, Earth and Climate Defender, Institute of Indigenous Memory and Science, from Brazil;

Omowumi Ogunrotimi , Founder & Executive Lead, Gender Mobile Initiative, from Nigeria; and

Lydia Kekeli Amenyaglo , Creative Director, Ghana Food Movement, from Ghana

“These remarkable leaders are driving progress on some of the most urgent issues of our time – they’re defending human rights, transforming food systems, and fighting for a brighter future for their communities,” said Liza Henshaw, President, Global Citizen. “
