Distinguished Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, CON (MOB) is a renowned Nigerian lawyer, human rights activist, democrat and politician.
He currently serves as the Senate Leader (Majority Leader) of the 10th Senate and represents Ekiti Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly. Widely respected for his legislative leadership and commitment to democratic governance, his public service career spans over three decades.
Early Life and Education (1963–1992)
July 29, 1963 –
Born in Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State, into the family of the late Sir Stephen Ogunjuyigbe Bamidele. He spent his formative years in Lagos.
Secondary Education – Attended Baptist Academy, Lagos.
1986 –
Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Religious Studies from Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly the University of Ife).
1980s – Distinguished himself in student activism, serving in students’ union leadership and later becoming National President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), where he championed pro-democracy campaigns and opposed anti-people policies under military rule.
1990 –
Obtained a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Benin.
1992 –
Graduated from the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Democracy Struggle and Legal Career (1992–1999)
June 1992 –
Contested the SDP primary election for the House of Representatives in Oshodi/Isolo Federal Constituency, narrowly losing by one vote.
October 1992 –
Appointed Special Assistant on Legal Matters to Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, then Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Finance, Appropriation and Currency.
1993–1998 –
Following the annulment of the June 12 election and the military takeover, became actively involved in the pro-democracy movement.
He was among lawyers who defended Chief M.K.O. Abiola during his treason trial and remained a strong advocate for constitutional democracy and human rights.
January 1999 –
Earned a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from Franklin Pierce Law Center (now University of New Hampshire School of Law), USA, and was admitted to the New York Bar as an Attorney and Counselor-at-Law.
Executive Service in Lagos State (2000–2011)
July 2000 –
Appointed Senior Special Assistant (Political and Intergovernmental Relations) to Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
July 2003 –
Sworn in as Commissioner for Youth, Sports and Social Development, Lagos State.
July 2007 –
Appointed Commissioner for Information and Strategy under Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), where he served until 2011.
National Assembly Career (2011–Present)
April 2011
– Elected into the House of Representatives representing Ado-Ekiti/Irepodun-Ifelodun Federal Constituency.
June 2011 – June 2015 –
Served in the 7th House of Representatives, contributing significantly to legislative debates and constituency development.
2015 –
Became a founding leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State following the merger that created the party.
June 2018 –
Survived an accidental gunshot incident during an APC governorship campaign rally in Ado-Ekiti.
February 2019 – Elected Senator representing Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
June 2019 – June 2023
– Served as Chairman, Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, leading major legal and constitutional reforms.
October 2022 –
Conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by President Muhammadu Buhari.
February 2023 –
Re-elected for a second term in the Senate.
July 4, 2023 –
Appointed Senate Leader (Majority Leader) of the 10th Senate by the APC Caucus and officially announced by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Leadership in the 10th Senate (2023–2026)
2023–Present – Coordinates the legislative agenda of the Senate, leading the passage of major reforms on fiscal policy, education, constitutional amendment, national security and economic development. Under his leadership, the 10th Senate has recorded one of the highest legislative outputs .
