Mohammed Lawal Uwais GCON (12 June 1936 – 6 June 2025) was a Nigerian jurist who served as the chief justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria from 1995 to 2006. He chaired a commission that published a much-publicized report on electoral reform.

Justice Mohammed Uwais was the son of the Chief Alkali, and later Waziri of Zaria emirate.

“After retiring from the Supreme Court, Uwais chaired a panel on electoral reform that submitted a report on 11 December 2008 with recommendations that included establishing commissions to deal with Electoral Offences, Constituency Delimitation and Political Parties Registration and Regulation. Some of the power vested in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the State Independent Electoral Commissions would be transferred to the new commissions.”

Senator Babafemi Ojudu,former Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on political matters sent his condolence message to Justice Uwais wife,the message read thus:

Dear Mrs. Maryam Uwais,

I received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of your beloved husband, Justice Muhammed Lawal Uwais — a jurist of great distinction, a man of unwavering integrity, and a devout Muslim whose life was a shining example of faith, wisdom, and service.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences. His legacy as a legal luminary and a principled servant of justice will endure for generations, and his memory will remain a source of pride and inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. May He also grant you and your family strength, peace, and comfort during this difficult time.
