The Man ,Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o, a Kenyan author and academic, was born on January 5, 1938, in Kamiriithu village, Kenya. He is renowned for his novels, plays, and essays, and has been described as “East Africa’s leading novelist”. Thiong’o’s early writing was in English, but he later shifted to writing primarily in Gikuyu, his native language. He is also the founder and editor of the Gikuyu-language journal Mũtĩiri.

Early Life and Education:

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o was born James Ngũgĩ into a large peasant family.
He attended Kamandura, Manguu, and Kinyogori primary schools, as well as Alliance High School in Kenya.
He later studied at Makerere University College in Kampala, Uganda, and the University of Leeds in Britain.

Career and Activism:

Thiong’o’s literary career began with his play The Black Hermit, which was performed at the National Theatre in Kampala in 1962.
He published his first novel, Weep Not, Child, in 1964, followed by The River Between in 1965.
He was a lecturer in the Department of English at the University of Nairobi, and later became a senior lecturer and chair of the literature department.
He was imprisoned in 1978 and went into self-exile in 1982.
Thiong’o has been a vocal advocate for the use of African languages in literature and education.

Ngugi Dies on Wednesday ,May 28,2025 at ripe age of 87.He was one of the greatest writers of the African descent of all times.May his cerebral soul rest in peace eternally.
