Prince Tajudeen Oluyole Olusi, born on October 13, 1936, is a distinguished Nigerian political leader and a prominent figure in Lagos State’s sociopolitical landscape. As the son of Oba Sanusi Olusi, a former Oba of Lagos, Prince Olusi hails from the esteemed Olusi royal family. Over the years, he has earned the affectionate title “Baba Olusi”, symbolizing his revered status as a father figure in Lagos politics and the community.
Early Life and Education
Prince Olusi was born and raised in the Olusi Palace on Lagos Island, specifically within the Olowogbowo community, a historically significant part of Lagos. Growing up in this culturally rich environment deeply influenced his sense of service and leadership. He began his education at Ansar-Ud-Deen Primary School, Alakoro, Lagos, and later attended Araromi Baptist School. His educational journey continued at United Middle School in Tamale, Ghana, from 1952 to 1954, and he completed his secondary education at Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Isolo, between 1955 and 1958. Furthering his studies, he attended the Lagos Centre for Higher Studies and Yaba College of Technology.
Political Career
Prince Olusi’s political career began in 1962 when he was elected as a councillor for the Lagos Town Council at the age of 26, representing the Action Group (AG) party led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. His dedication to public service led to his re-election until the military coup in 1966. He later served in the Lagos City Council from 1972 to 1975 and won another election as a councillor in 1976. Despite political challenges, including an annulled chairmanship election, Prince Olusi remained steadfast in his commitment to his constituents.
With the return to civilian rule in 1979, he became the first Secretary of the Lagos Division of the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) and was elected to represent Lagos South in the Federal House of Representatives. His political journey continued as he held various significant positions, including Commissioner for Commerce from 1993 to 1996. Currently, he serves as the chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), a pivotal decision-making body in Lagos State’s political arena.
Relationship with Olowogbowo Community
Prince Olusi’s leadership has been deeply connected to the Olowogbowo community, where he has remained a strong advocate for its development. As a proud son of Olowogbowo, he has worked tirelessly to preserve its rich heritage, promote infrastructural growth, and support youth empowerment initiatives. His contributions to the community include advocating for improved education, economic opportunities, and the overall well-being of its residents. Through his leadership, he has strengthened the historical and cultural identity of Olowogbowo, ensuring its continued relevance in the broader landscape of Lagos Island.
Personal Life
Prince Olusi is a devout Muslim and a respected community leader. His legacy of public service continues through his family; his son, Prince Tijani Adetoyese Olusi, born on October 29, 1967, currently serves as the Executive Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government.
Throughout his extensive career, Baba Olusi has remained a steadfast advocate for the development and prosperity of Lagos State, particularly within the Olowogbowo community. His enduring commitment to service has cemented his place as one of the most respected figures in Lagos politics and history.
