No pioneer staff or student of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin-Ekiti (FUTES-IYIN) will ever forget the name Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.
And those who are yet to pass through this University will undoubtedly hear the story of the man whose vision helped bring it to life.
Some legacies are engraved on marble.
Others are etched into the lives of people.
The FUTES-IYIN legacy belongs to the latter.
Just pause for a moment and imagine the ripple effect.
Imagine the hundreds of men and women who have exchanged years of unemployment for meaningful careers and sustainable livelihoods because this University exists.
Imagine the thousands of young Nigerians who have secured admission into future-driven academic programmes after years of waiting for an opportunity that once seemed out of reach.
Imagine the generations of students who will still pass through these classrooms long after today, acquiring knowledge, developing skills and finding purpose.
Imagine the lecturers whose research will solve problems. The innovators whose ideas will create businesses. The professionals who will emerge from this institution to serve Nigeria and the global community.
Then think about Iyin-Ekiti itself.
Think about the businesses that have sprung up, the economic activities that have expanded, the investments attracted, the visibility the community now enjoys, and the countless opportunities that continue to unfold because a federal university found a home here.
These are the kinds of impacts that cannot be captured in a single report or measured in today’s statistics.
Perhaps what makes this even more remarkable is that things could have been different.
With his influence, capacity and network, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele could easily have pursued a private university that would bear his name. Few would have questioned such a decision.
Instead, he chose a different path.
He chose an institution that belongs to the people.

An institution that will continue to employ men and women he may never meet.

Since the University’s establishment, Distinguished Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele has remained a dependable pillar of support, consistently demonstrating genuine interest in its growth and progress. His commitment did not end with the signing of the bill; it has continued through unwavering encouragement, advocacy and support.
Today, we may not be able to fully quantify the blessings FUTES-IYIN has brought to individuals, families, Iyin-Ekiti, Ekiti State and Nigeria as a whole.
But years from now, when thousands more have passed through its gates and its impact has multiplied beyond imagination, history will look back and acknowledge that this institution did not happen by chance.
It happened because someone chose to think beyond himself.
