AS EKITI PEOPLE ONCE AGAIN GO TO THE POLLS
By Ekiti Future Agenda
As the people of Ekiti State once again prepare to exercise one of the most sacred responsibilities of democratic citizenship through the ballot box, this moment presents yet another opportunity for deep reflection, collective responsibility, and renewed commitment to the ideals that have long defined the Land of Honour.
In a democratic governance, elections are not merely political rituals conducted every few years. They are defining moments in the life of a people. They determine the direction of governance, the quality of leadership, the pace of development, and ultimately the future of generations yet unborn. For Ekiti people, whose history is deeply rooted in intellectualism, integrity, courage, and strong moral values, elections must go beyond partisan contests and personal ambitions. They must represent a solemn commitment to the preservation of democratic values and the advancement of the common good.
As campaigns intensify and political activities gather momentum across towns and communities, all stakeholders must recognise the urgent need for peaceful, free, and fair elections. Democracy flourishes only where peace prevails. Violence, intimidation, vote-buying, political thuggery, fake news, false propaganda and inflammatory rhetoric have no place in any civilized electoral process, especially not in Ekiti State, a land renowned for enlightenment and political consciousness.
The beauty of democracy lies in the freedom of the people to make choices without fear, coercion, manipulation, or external influence. Every eligible voter must therefore be allowed to vote freely according to conscience and conviction. Security agencies, electoral officials, political parties, traditional institutions, religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organisations all have important roles to play in ensuring that the electoral process remains credible and transparent.
Political actors, in particular, must understand that power gained through violence or fraud can never truly serve the people. Leadership is a sacred trust, not a conquest. Candidates and their supporters must conduct themselves with maturity, decency, and respect for democratic norms. Elections should not divide communities or destroy relationships that have existed for decades. After the votes are counted and winners declared, the people will still remain neighbours, brothers, sisters, and partners in the shared task of building a greater Ekiti.
The electorate must also rise to the occasion by embracing a voting pattern that guarantees a better and more rewarding future for the state and its people. This is perhaps the greatest responsibility before the citizens today. Voting should not be driven by temporary inducements, sectional sentiments, empty promises, or political propaganda. Rather, it should be guided by competence, character, credibility, capacity, and genuine commitment to public service.
Ekiti State deserves leadership that prioritises education, youth empowerment, economic growth, infrastructural development, healthcare delivery, agricultural advancement, and job creation. The people deserve leaders who understand the challenges facing ordinary citizens and possess both the vision and political will to address them meaningfully.
For too long, many elections across the nation have been influenced by vote trading and short-term material gains. While poverty and economic hardship may tempt some citizens to exchange their votes for money or gifts, Ekiti people must remember that the true value of a vote is far greater than any immediate gratification. A poorly cast vote can produce years of bad governance, underdevelopment, insecurity, and wasted opportunities.
The future of Ekiti cannot be mortgaged for temporary benefits. The destiny of the state must not be sacrificed on the altar of political desperation or selfish interests. Instead, voters must carefully assess the track records, ideas, integrity, and competence of those seeking public office. They must ask difficult questions. What vision do the candidates have for the state? What values do they represent? Are they capable of uniting the people and advancing development? Are they committed to transparency and accountability?
These are the considerations that should shape voting decisions if Ekiti is to continue progressing as one of Nigeria’s most respected states.
Beyond politics, there is also the urgent need to protect the integrity and image of Ekiti State as a land of honour. This identity was not inherited by accident. It was built over generations by men and women who distinguished themselves through honesty, hard work, wisdom, learning, courage, and excellence. Ekiti has produced some of Nigeria’s finest intellectuals, administrators, jurists, academics, and statesmen. The state has earned national respect because of the dignity and values associated with its people.
Those values must not be compromised during elections.
Ekiti people have always been known for political sophistication and independent thinking. They have historically demonstrated the courage to defend justice, reject oppression, and hold leaders accountable. This proud legacy must continue. Elections should therefore reflect the maturity, discipline, and enlightened character for which the state is known.
The youth, especially, must resist being used as instruments of violence or disruption. They must instead become ambassadors of peace and democratic responsibility. Their energy and influence should be channelled toward constructive engagement, voter education, issue-based participation, and the defence of electoral integrity.
Traditional rulers, community leaders, religious institutions, and opinion moulders must also continue to preach peace, tolerance, and responsible conduct before, during, and after the elections. Their voices carry enormous influence and can help calm tensions, discourage violence, and promote unity among the people.
It is equally important for electoral authorities to maintain neutrality, professionalism, and transparency throughout the process. Public confidence in elections depends largely on the credibility of the institutions responsible for conducting them. Every vote must count, and every lawful vote must be protected.
As Ekiti people once again go to the polls, this election should not simply be viewed as another political exercise. It should be seen as a defining opportunity to strengthen democracy, preserve the honour of the state, and shape a future of greater prosperity, justice, and progress.
History will remember the choices made at this critical moment. Future generations will judge whether today’s citizens acted with wisdom, courage, and patriotism or allowed narrow interests to overshadow the collective good.
May this election stand as a shining example of peace, fairness, maturity, and democratic excellence. And may Ekiti State continue to rise as a beacon of honour, integrity, and enlightened leadership in Nigeria.
