Kiriji Heritage Conservation Foundation Launched: Preserving the Epic Legacy of the 16-Year Ekiti Parapo War

In a powerful move to reclaim and immortalise Yoruba history, the Kiriji Heritage Conservation Foundation has been officially launched as a bold, visionary platform dedicated to preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and safeguarding the stories that define a people.

The Foundation takes its name from the historic Kiriji War, also known as the Ekiti–Parapo War — a monumental 16-year civil war (1877–1893) that pitted the Western Yoruba forces, primarily the Ibadan and Oyo-speaking Yorubas, against a formidable alliance of Eastern Yoruba kingdoms, including the Ekiti, Ijesha, Ijebu, Yagba, and several others. This epic conflict, marked by courage, strategy, and resilience, remains one of the most significant chapters in Yoruba history, shaping identities, alliances, and the collective memory of the race.

Yet beyond the war itself, the Foundation draws attention to the historic peace treaty signed on 23 September 1886 at Imesi-Ile, a landmark agreement that formally paved the way for the end of the conflict and stands today as a lasting symbol of reconciliation, diplomacy, and Yoruba collective memory.

With deep historical consciousness and a strong sense of purpose, the Kiriji Heritage Conservation Foundation stands as a beacon for cultural preservation, legacy protection, and community enlightenment. At a time when many vital historical narratives risk being forgotten, the Foundation is committed to documenting, celebrating, and transmitting this rich heritage to future generations.
